Essential Question: What are the details, topic, and main idea of the story?  What new information did one find in the story?  What conclusion has one gleaned after reading the story?

Assessment Question:*

 

1.  Paper/Pencil:**What is the difference between the topic sentence of a paragraph and the detail sentences?

 

     Answer:**The topic sentence tells the main idea and the detail sentences explain the main idea.

 

  1. Performance Question:**Given a simple graphic organizer, the student will be able to complete it with appropriate information from their story regarding the topic and detail sentences.

 

     Assessment Tool:**The students will each complete the graphic organizer to demonstrate mastery of basic paragraph structure.

 

Activity: Each student will write a paragraph about what makes him or her: happy, sad, scared, and proud.  Using construction paper for a cover, the teacher would then combine all the paragraphs to create a classroom book entitled, “Our Book of Feelings”.  Students would then form a circle and pass the book around as each student read the paragraph that he or she wrote.
