Assessment Question:*
1. Paper/Pencil:** What elements of writing are necessary in order to create an interesting and well-composed piece of writing?
Answer:** The necessary elements are descriptive words and varied sentence length.
2. Performance Question:**Create a descriptive paragraph telling about your experience on a summer vacation trip. Remember to include interesting words and a variety of sentence lengths.
Assessment Tool:** rubric which rates vocabulary and sentence structure.
Activity: Write each student’s name on a slip of paper and place each name in a hat. Have each student choose a name, but keep it secret. For a week, students would secretly place nice notes or small tokens in their “secret pal’s” bin or desk. At the end of the week, have students reveal themselves to their secret pal. Students would then write thank you letters to one another for all the thoughtful notes and tokens received that week.

Resources for this activity: paper, pencils, variety of small tokens which students give to one another
