1. Paper/Pencil:** Who is the main character in a story? What is the setting of a story? What is a problem in a story? What is the solution of a story?
Answer:** The main character is who the story is about. The setting is where or when the story takes place. The problem is something that happens in the story that needs to be solved. The solution is how the problem is solved.
Read the story,
“Emily and Alice Again” together.
Discuss the following parts of a story:
characters, setting, problem and solution. Have students work in small groups to complete a story map on
this selection using large chart paper.
Students will share their story maps with the class when finished.
Assessment Tool:** As students explain their story maps, the teacher will evaluate whether or not each part of the story map has been completed correctly.
Activity: Read The Berenstain Bears Learn About Strangers to the class. Have students retell the important rules for safe conduct among strangers that were discussed in the story. Soon after this, invite a D.A.R.E. officer into the classroom to further discuss the importance of staying away from strangers. The officer will normally visit once a week for 3 consecutive weeks.
Duration: 20 minutes for the story and three, 30-minute lessons for the D.A.R.E officer
